Mass. lawmakers pass bill to legalize school bus traffic safety cameras

BOSTON (WPRI) — Massachusetts lawmakers approved a bill that will allow cities and towns in the Bay State to install automated traffic enforcement cameras on school buses.

According to the bill, cameras would take photos and videos of cars that may drive by stopped buses.

Local police departments are then required to review the footage and decide if fines should be issued.

Additionally, the bill requires the buses with the cameras to be clearly marked, and footage must be destroyed within 30 days for non-violation recordings and within 1 year of the resolution of a violation case.

These cameras were tested on buses in Salem and Peabody last year and they caught more than 3,000 drivers passing school buses illegally, and in some cases, coming close to hitting kids.

The bill now heads to Gov. Maura Healey’s desk.
