‘It’s really exciting to see the entire street filled with green’: Worcester’s Celtic 5K a wonderful tradition

Many households’ attire turns to the wearing of green on March 17, for popular reasons. Call it a public display of Irish spirit, or possibly just to avoid some smart aleck whiner trying to embarrass, “Why aren’t you wearing green? Don’t you know what today is?”

In Worcester this year, same goes for the day before, when the St. Patrick’s Day Parade brings out the emerald along the route on Park Avenue. But as has become recent tradition, the parade’s prelude will more than spring participants and onlookers into the St. Paddy’s spirit.

For the lucky 13th time, the Celtic 5K will precede Worcester’s festive parade, beginning at 11 a.m. March 16 — next Sunday — at Elm Park, on the corner of Park Avenue and Highland Street. This actually is the 14th Celtic 5K — because of COVID, there was no parade, but the race was postponed to October, like the Boston Marathon and other big running events…
