Second Chance urges thoughtful commitment amid shelter overcrowding

EAST BROOKFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – As animal shelters across the nation continue to face critical overcrowding, Second Chance Animal Services is asking prospective pet adopters to approach the process with deeper consideration, patience, and long-term commitment.

With rising numbers of owner surrenders, emergency cases, and pets in need of behavioral or medical intervention, the nonprofit is highlighting the urgent realities facing shelters—and what members of the public can do to help alleviate the strain.

“Right now, shelters are full—dealing with a flood of emergency cases and difficult circumstances,” said Sheryl Blancato, CEO of Second Chance Animal Services. “One of the best ways the public can support us is by making informed, lifelong commitments when adopting.”

Behind the scenes, shelter staff are working daily to rescue and rehabilitate animals from challenging situations, including neglect, abuse, and medical emergencies. Many pets require long-term care, training, or recovery before they’re ready for adoption. Meanwhile, limited space and stretched resources remain ongoing concerns.

Second Chance is encouraging adopters to assess whether they’re truly ready for a new pet. This includes evaluating lifestyle compatibility, understanding costs like veterinary bills and food, and planning for training and adjustment periods.
