Editorial: Guards say DOC suit settlement doesn’t fit their safety issues

Just a coincidence, or did one decision taken by the Department of Correction have anything to do with the other?

At the same time the DOC announced the lowering of the minimum age to become an officer from 21 to 19, the union that represents those officers lambasted the settlement the department had just reached with plaintiffs in a class-action lawsuit filed by Prisoners’ Legal Services.

That suit was filed in response to actions taken by the guards in the aftermath of what the union characterized as a “brutal attack” on several officers at the Souza-Baranowski maximum-security prison in January of 2020…
