Mass. households face food affordability issues amid SNAP benefit cuts

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – The Food Bank of Western Massachusetts hosted an open house Wednesday to raise awareness about the ongoing fight against hunger.

Food insecurity in western Mass. on the rise, local food banks address community needs

The event featured an award ceremony honoring community partners for their commitment to ending hunger in our region.

This comes amid rising food insecurity across the state. A recent report found that as of 2024, one in three Massachusetts households struggles to afford food. Leaders of the organization tell 22News that they are providing more food to people than ever before.

Andrew Morehouse, Executive Director of the Food Bank of Western Massachusetts, explains, “We can’t do it without the investment of the federal government. Right now, in Congress, they’re proposing deep cuts to SNAP benefits and many other social service programs and Medicaid. All of which are going to fall the hardest on the most vulnerable of our community.”…
