Through June 29, approved adopters will be able to adopt any dog at least one year old for free. It is the first of several summer adopt-a-thons planned for the coming months, featuring the theme “America Runs on Doggos.”

The Berkshire Humane Society will be joining eight other animal shelters and animal welfare organizations throughout Massachusetts for the initiative. The nine hope to collectively rehome 100 dogs during the week-long event.

“It’s no secret that there’s been a slowdown in dog adoptions, especially of larger dogs, that’s created capacity problems at shelters in Massachusetts and across the country,” said Jamie Garabedian, project manage of the MSPCA-Angell’s Animal Protection Division. “We want to be there for all the animals who need us, but we need to open up shelter space in order to do that.”

The Berkshire Humane Society is located at 214 Barker Road in Pittsfield. Adoptable animals and adoption process guidelines — including application forms — can be found on the shelter’s website
