Massachusetts And Connecticut Lead The Way In Strict Fireworks Rules

What’s the worst place in New England for fireworks? Before you say Connecticut, I have the answer for you.

I love setting off fireworks on or near the 4th of July, yet I risk angering the neighbors and the law in Connecticut if I light some off. I used to think that Connecticut had the toughest restrictions in all of the US, but I was wrong.

What is Legal to Light Off in Connecticut?

The fireworks that you can legally buy from the convenience store display or the temporary roadside booths in Connecticut this time of year never fail to disappoint. You cannot purchase fireworks that fly or explode, but you can purchase smoke bombs, fountains, and sparklers. According to ct.gov, sparklers and fountains are the only legal ‘Firework’ available for purchase in our state, and they must be ‘Non-Explosive/Non-Aerial’.

Our Northerly neighbors Massachusetts? Even more restrictive. An ordinary citizen cannot legally possess any firework in the Commonwealth, and that includes the weaklings that Connecticut allows – sparklers, snakes, and fountains.

If a private citizen is found in possession of fireworks in Massachusetts they are subject to a $10 to $1000 fine, confiscation of all of your works, and up to a year in prison. This is for any firework that produces a visible or audible effect…
