Newly filed bill aims to ban ICE agents from covering their faces in Massachusetts

ATTLEBORO, Mass. (WPRI) — A Massachusetts lawmaker has proposed legislation to ban law enforcement officers from wearing masks and personal disguises while on duty.

State Rep. Jim Hawkins, an Attleboro Democrat, has introduced the bill saying there’s been rising complaints among critics of ICE over agents wearing face coverings while detaining people for immigration-related reasons.

“We’ve seen recently a real erosion in public trust — people don’t trust law enforcement that’s coming,” Hawkins said. “We’ve got women and children who are taken by masked people who are not identified and they’re removed. That’s scaring a lot of people.”…
