Opinion/Guest column: Free school meals deserve place at table year-round

As the school year ends, a harsh reality sets in for thousands of families across the country: the disappearance of school meals.

For many children, these meals are more than just lunch — they are often the most consistent source of nutrition for thousands of kids. When summer break begins, so does the scramble for families to find reliable food options, often without much success or regularity.

An estimated 21.5% of households with children in our community, in Massachusetts, are facing food insecurity. A new report from the Greater Boston Food Bank estimates that one in three families experience this hardship.
