Update on Massachusetts’ emergency shelter system

BOSTON (WWLP) – Governor Healey first declared a State of Emergency due to the overburdened shelter system in August 2023, and her administration recently extended the declaration through November of this year.

This bill would make school lunches healthier

The state’s housing secretary says the system can no longer support the level of demand for emergency housing, citing decreased federal support, high housing costs, and increased economic uncertainty.

In the most recent budget, the state appropriated over $276 million for the system and implemented a 4,000-family cap, both cited in the Housing Secretary’s announcement letter as reasons the system cannot keep up with demand. The House speaker does not see the need for the state of emergency declaration.

“I don’t know what the emergency is,” said Speaker Ron Mariano. “We funded it adequately, and it shouldn’t be a problem.”…
