Heat stroke vs. heat exhaustion: what to look out for

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – If you are going to be spending a prolonged period of time in the heat, it is important to know the symptoms of heat stroke and heat exhaustion.

Heat index in western Massachusetts to hit 100 degrees

Heat stroke is the most serious heat-related illness and happens when the body can no longer control its temperature. Symptoms include confusion, slurred speech, dryness, hot, dry, or profuse sweating, and can be deadly if treatment is delayed.

On the other hand, heat exhaustion is the body’s response to excessive loss of water and salt. Symptoms include headache, dizziness, weakness, and heavy sweating.

If you need to be outside, stay hydrated by drinking water, and take breaks in air conditioning if possible or in a shaded area.
