Ireland-based company Applegreen plans to spend $750 million to modernize and maintain the plazas, most of which are along the Mass. Pike. Construction is set to begin early next year, with construction work set to support approximately 750 jobs.
“Massachusetts’ highway service plazas are long overdue for a complete reset,” said Monica Tibbits-Nutt, Secretary of Transportation. “This investment will deliver the kind of infrastructure travelers expect in a world-class state—and do so in a way that supports local workers and businesses.”
All current service plaza employees will be offered employment with Applegreen. The company also announced that Chicopee-based Rachael’s Food Corp will be the leading provider of sandwiches for Applegreen’s entire travel plaza business.
