Massachusetts schools selected to receive free early literacy tutoring

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The Healey-Driscoll administration has selected 272 schools across the state to receive free literacy tutoring for the upcoming school year, with a focus on improving early reading skills.

This initiative is funded through a $25 million investment, designed for students in kindergarten through third grade to build foundational reading skills. This type of high-dosage early literacy tutoring will be implemented through individual or small group sessions multiple times a week for at least ten weeks.

The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) will offer this tutoring program to participating school districts for free, with both in-person and virtual options. The program seeks to prioritize first-graders, with officials stating that this is a vital development stage for solidifying literacy skills.

“It’s crucial for our teachers and schools to have access to the resources they need to support every young reader,” said Governor Maura Healey. “This initiative will help bring high-dosage early literacy tutoring directly to students who need it most, giving them the foundational skills essential for long-term success.
