Worcester police urge road safety ahead of new school year

Worcester, MASS– In Worcester, nearly 25,000 students start a new school year on Monday. The Worcester police department is asking students to put down the cell phone when walking along the street and to only cross in crosswalks or where a crossing guard is present. Police said officers will be out strictly enforcing all traffics laws. They’re encouraging drivers to practice safe driving habits year-round, but said it’s even more important with buses and students now back on the roads.

“Slow down for any yellow lights. Don’t push the yellow lights. Don’t try to hurry through them. You want to stop for any of the flashing yellow lights in the crosswalks. When the green lights start to turn to yellow, slow down and come to a stop,” Sgt. Elise Miranda said. “Make sure you’re paying attention to school buses and that you’re staying 100 feet behind them when they’re traveling and then when the school buses put out their flashing yellow lights, make sure you stop.”…
