FIRST ALERT: Tracking severe weather today (live radar)

Severe weather is front and center for today.

What time will storms arrive in Boston area?

A sharp cold front will dive into our warm, humid airmass and set off a line of storms in western New England by early afternoon.

This line will march east, arriving in Greater Worcester by 4 to 5 p.m. and Greater Boston by 6 to 8 p.m. The South Shore, Cape and Islands will be spared.

Will these storms be severe? What will impacts be?

If these storms turn severe — and not all will — there could be damaging winds, hail, and a very small risk of a tornado (10% or less). This could be our biggest severe outbreak of the summer in central and western Massachusetts (which isn’t saying much, since it’s been a low-key summer storm-wise).

As these storms press east through Interstate 495 and Route 128, they will weaken somewhat.

They should move off Cape Ann by late evening and things should settle down.

Temperatures and humidity

Highs return to the mid and upper 80s. It’s definitely beach-worthy until the storms threaten in the late afternoon…
