Sunday Science: NWS confirms first New England tornado of 2025

Central Massachusetts was the location for yesterday’s first recorded tornado throughout New England in 2025. While there has been plenty of severe weather locally , this twister was the first of the year as it was confirmed by doppler radar.

When looking to identify rotation on radar, meteorologists use velocity and reflectivity products to locate rotational couplets and hook echoes. If both of these characteristics represent a conducive environment for a tornado, then meteorologists use another dual-polarization product known as correlation coefficient. In this weeks edition of Sunday Science, Storm Team 10 Meteorologist A.J. Mastrangelo explains how correlation coefficient can help meteorologists identity a tornado debris signature.
