Inmates may soon be able to confidentially call state lawmakers

BOSTON (WWLP) – Massachusetts lawmakers are considering a bill that would allow inmates to have confidential communication with state legislators, expanding the current list of privileged contacts.

Currently, inmates in Massachusetts can have unmonitored conversations with their attorneys, judges, and the governor. The proposed bill, discussed at a State House meeting, seeks to add members of the state legislature to this list, allowing inmates to communicate confidentially with them.

Senator Liz Miranda, who sponsored the bill, emphasized the importance of allowing inmates to reach out to state lawmakers when they feel unheard. “Elected officials above all must know what happens inside our prisons if we are to be true advocates for all constituents, especially those who are in the care and custody of the commonwealth,” she said…
