Individual in critical condition after self-inflicted gunshot in Palmer

PALMER, Mass. (WWLP) – An individual is in serious condition after suffering a self-inflicted gunshot in Palmer Saturday night.

In a statement from the Palmer Police Department, at around 8:40 p.m., officers were called to a well-being check of an individual who was believed to be armed. Upon arrival to an address in downtown, the person they were looking for was last seen heading toward the nearby wooded area.

Officers made contact with the individual who had a firearm, and efforts were made to de-escalate and negotiate with them as well as create space and time. As officers were awaiting a negotiator, the individual suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound. They were taken to a nearby hospital, and police say they are in critical condition.

Members of the Hampden County Sheriff’s Department, the Monson Police Department with a K-9 unit, and crews from the Palmer and Wilbraham Fire Departments assisted. No further information will be released.
