Updated ’25-’26 Winter Forecast For Massachusetts

Wondering what winter in Massachusetts will be like this year? The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has a forecast for December 2025 through February 2026 – let’s break it down for you.

Temperature

Massachusetts, including places like Boston and Worcester, might have a warmer winter than usual. NOAA says there’s a 33 – 40% chance that temperatures will be above average. That means fewer super-cold days, so you might not need your heaviest coat every day, and your skin might not crack and bleed as bad. However, in western areas like here in the Berkshires, it could feel more like a typical winter.

Snow

What about snow? NOAA’s forecast says there’s an equal chance (about 33%) of getting more snow, less snow, or the usual amount. So, you might build snowmen or see more rain, especially near the coast. This is because of La Niña, a weather pattern in the Pacific Ocean that can make northern states wetter but doesn’t give Massachusetts a clear snowy signal.

Drought

Good news for southern Massachusetts, including Boston: any dry conditions should get better by late January 2026, according to NOAA. Northern areas might still be a bit dry, though.

As most of New England is currently experiencing a mild to severe drought, NOAA estimates that Southern New England will not endure a drought through the end of January whereas the drought will persist in Northern New England, including some of Western Massachusetts. –boston.com
