Gardner man accused of beating his neighbor to death testifies in his own defense

WORCESTER – Matthew Vanier, the former Gardner man on trial for allegedly bludgeoning his neighbor to death in 2017, testified in his own defense Monday, Nov. 10, telling a story prosecutors skewered on cross-examination.

“You don’t recall using a mop to clean up your bloody footprints?” Assistant District Attorney Lina Pashou asked Vanier during questioning in which she drew jurors’ attention to multiple parts of Vanier’s account she implied were untrue.
