Massachusetts State Police mourns loss of noble, beloved horse ‘Jay’

“On the evening of November 19, 2025, Massachusetts State Police Mount Jay passed away from complications from cancer.

Jay, a 12 ½ year old Percheron, joined the Mounted Unit at the age of 10 in March of 2023 from CNY Event Ranch in Oswego NY. Standing 18 hands tall, his stature made quite the presence at every event he attended. He immediately became one of our A-Team horses which meant he was a truly reliable “go to” horse for our Unit members and was always head of the pack with his superior size and temperament.

He crossed the gamut of patrol, parades, community events, searches, and crowd control. In the 2 ½ years with the Unit, Jay patrolled our state, competed in Mounted Unit competitions in Kentucky, trained in Washington D.C., and stood out at any event.
