CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – Friday marks the first day of Kwanzaa, a six-day celebration honoring African American culture and heritage, running from December 26th through January 1st.
The National Day Calendar states that Kwanzaa is derived from the Swahili phrase “matunda ya kwanza,” meaning “first fruits.” Founded by Dr. Maulana Karenga in 1966, the holiday seeks to unify the African American community through cultural celebrations that emphasize family and community values.
During Kwanzaa, families gather each night to light a candle on the Kinara, a candle holder and discuss one of the seven principles known as Nguzo Saba. These principles are designed to encourage reflection and reinforce values important to the African American community…
