Fast food chain Checkers opens first New England location in Worcester

WORCESTER – Noontime Wednesday, Feb. 11, at the new Checkers at 99 Gold Star Blvd. was filled with a working-class aesthetic. The busy eatery was filled with men wearing work boots and work jackets, the bright neon yellow-green of landscape and road workers, people in UMass Memorial jackets, a couple of members of Best Buy’s Geek Squad and other clear signs that the restaurant was getting a test spin at lunch break.

“People who work around here, they are always looking for a new place to try lunch,” Devon Leland, a Worcester resident who works in manufacturing near the new Checkers, said Wednesday, Feb. 11. “They see the signs going up when they are driving to work and they get excited to try a new place, especially a chain that has not been around here.”

Checkers is a chain of burger-and-fries restaurants, with the Worcester location, which opened Tuesday, Feb. 10, marking its first foray into New England. Burgers, fries, chicken sandwiches, chicken wings and nuggets, hot dogs, fish sandwiches and funnel-cake fries are all on the menu…
