Lee Select Board supports legislation to eliminate consumer fees for opting out of a ‘smart meter’

Lee — Following a February 3 detailed presentation by Massachusetts for Safe Technology Director Cece Doucette, the Lee Select Board unanimously approved sending a letter to Commonwealth officials in support of pending state legislation that would eliminate fees charged by telecommunications companies to customers who opt out of exchanging their current electric meters for new “smart meters.”

The smart meter rollout: pros and cons

Local energy companies such as Eversource are now rolling out programs in Massachusetts to exchange current electric meters for devices that constantly emit signals to engineers reflecting energy usage data from ratepayers. Although company representatives stated the new meters are more efficient and a cost savings since they obviate the need for technicians to drive by customer sites to read the meters, the issue for some ratepayers lies in the data transmission itself with its constant pulsing of radio frequencies or electromagnetic fields [EMF] 24 hours a day, every day of the week.

Those emissions have been alleged to exacerbate cancer risks in individuals treated by radiation and/or chemotherapy and cause severe health problems in others…
