Some school districts across Worcester County are preparing for a longer academic year as an unusually heavy winter of snow closures will push some schools past the traditional mid-June finish.
A string of storms this winter, highlighted by a historic blizzard in late February that brought heavy snow across the region, have already forced multiple closures and added make-up days to school calendars.
Per the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, school districts must schedule a school year consisting of 185 days. Schools are required meet a minimum 180 days in class and schedule the extra five days in the case of closures due to health, weather and safety emergencies…
