Then & Now: Penny’s Market, 366 Hamilton St., Worcester

From bread to milk to six-packs, the storefront at 366 Hamilton St. in Worcester has been stocked with the needs of the neighborhood for more than a century.

One of the earliest proprietors in the Grafton Hill storefront was Joseph Widoff, a grocer. He served in World War I before opening Widoff’s Market on the ground floor of the Hamilton Street three-decker. Like many shopkeepers, he lived in an upstairs apartment.

He was 51 when he died in early 1947…
