How a Worcester opt-out provision for developers is leading to more affordable housing

A fund that lets developers opt out of building their own affordable housing has been instrumental in getting other affordable housing built.

Worcester’s Affordable Housing Trust Fund has funded the development of 381 affordable housing units in the city, according to chief development officer Peter Dunn.

The trust fund, which was established in 2021, provides funding for developers to build or preserve housing for people with low incomes. Nearly $19.7 million has been given to developers building projects with some or only affordable units that are restricted to those making up to certain incomes.
