Op-ed: State Police misconduct report requires scrutiny

Gov. Mura Healey has had some recent embarrassments to contend with. Her key aide to Western Mass. was arrested for allegedly possessing illegal drugs and a firearm, and her administration’s controversial process of awarding a billion-dollar contract to redesign highway rest stops was criticized by the state Inspector General as deeply flawed and lacking integrity. But none can be more embarrassing than the 5-alarm crisis slamming her state police force.

The Mass. State Police have faced a series of high-profile scandals that have badly tarnished a storied law enforcement agency. Media headlines have legitimately focused on troopers and supervisors facing criminal charges, convictions and even incarceration in cases involving overtime abuse, shoplifting, domestic violence, fraud and misconduct. Recently, several troopers were charged with involuntary manslaughter for their alleged roles in causing the death of a recruit during training while an on duty Sargent, allegedly intoxicated, crashed head on into another vehicle causing death to the occupant.

Each incident chipped away at public confidence and raised deeper questions about leadership, training, supervision, and accountability within what appears to be a flawed organizational culture…
