Westborough town meeting to decide on lower voting age to 16 in local elections

A group of Westborough High School students are pushing to lower the town’s voting age. The measure aimed at allowing 16-year-olds and 17-year-olds the ability to vote in local elections and meetings goes before a town meeting Saturday, March 21st.

Westborough junior Gerhard Doering, “Students would be able to stand up and speak about the budget, about different capital expenditures throughout the town, as well as anything else that is being put on a warrant article in the town, as well as vote on that.”

Westborough senior Ava Wallace says one of the main goals of the article is engagement, “One of our goals is to increase civic engagement because of people not knowing about this enough or not being civically engaged so as I talk to my peers they are they definitely portray a lot of interest and they would like to get more involved so we created a club at our high school called “Westborough Vote 16” where students can come in to one of our classrooms hosted by our history teachers and we just we can educate people about what’s going on in the town.”…
