Worcester Walmart Hub Goes Dark, 90 Workers Left in Limbo

Walmart has quietly shut down its Sam’s Club fulfillment center in Worcester, cutting roughly 90 jobs when the facility closed on Feb. 25. The closure is part of a broader effort by the retail giant to phase out older online-order hubs while ramping up newer, high-tech fulfillment centers elsewhere. Affected associates were offered paid transition time and transfer incentives, but not every job will survive the shakeup.

According to a notice Walmart filed with the state, reported by The Boston Globe, the shutdown took effect on Feb. 25 and involved about 90 employees. The filing states that workers who cannot land another role with the company by the end of May will be terminated. During a 90-day paid transition period, associates can apply for jobs at Walmart stores, Sam’s Club locations, or other company facilities. The now-closed fulfillment site sits at 1 Tobias Boland Way, near the RK Worcester Crossing retail complex.

Next-Generation Automation Behind the Move

Walmart has been shifting its e-commerce volume into a leaner network of automated “next-generation” fulfillment centers designed to speed up shipping and add more tech-focused roles. As the company describes on its corporate site, these centers are supposed to boost capacity and create new career pathways. Business Wire reports that one of the next-gen facilities is slated to open in Stockton, California, in 2026. That nationwide strategy helps explain why older Sam’s Club fulfillment locations are being consolidated or closed.

What It Means for Worcester Workers

Affected Worcester associates are being offered a $7,500 transfer incentive and, for those eligible, relocation benefits for moves beyond 50 miles, according to The Boston Globe. Workers have a 90-day paid transition window to chase other roles within Walmart and Sam’s Club. The notice warns that employees who do not secure a new position by the deadline could be separated by the end of May. During that period, jobseekers are being directed to Walmart’s hiring portal and to openings at nearby stores and clubs.

Part of a Wider Consolidation Trend

Industry watchers say Worcester is not an isolated case. The New Jersey Business & Industry Association reported that Walmart closed a Swedesboro Sam’s Club fulfillment center in 2024-25, shifting its workload into next-generation facilities while offering transfer bonuses and training to employees who moved. Those changes have fueled an ongoing debate over whether automation and consolidation truly create higher-skill opportunities or simply move jobs out of smaller local markets.

Local Footprint and What’s Next for the Site

The Worcester hub sits inside the RK Worcester Crossing complex along Route 146 and is listed in commercial materials as part of a cluster anchored by a high-volume Walmart Supercenter. Property records place the address group at 1-11 Tobias Boland Way in Worcester, putting the former fulfillment operation just a short drive from the main store. Walmart has not announced any concrete plans for the building. Any reuse or sale will depend on market interest and local permitting…
