Central Mass. man charged with stealing tax refund worth nearly $1M

A Gardner man was arrested Thursday on a charge related to stealing a U.S. Treasury tax refund check worth nearly $1 million, the Massachusetts U.S. Attorney’s Office announced.

Victor Vasquez, 40, has been charged with the theft of approximately $989,000 in government funds, federal prosecutors said in a press release.

In June 2024, Vasquez deposited a federal treasury check that had been issued to another taxpayer but altered to list Vasquez as the payee, federal prosecutors said. He deposited the check into a credit union account for a business he had closed years earlier — Victor Northeast Construction, LLC…
