Shrewsbury Public Schools budget snafu resolved, but Town Meeting will have final say

SHREWSBURY – A budget snafu may be over in Shrewsbury. Until Town Meeting, at least.

While planning the upcoming fiscal 2027 budget, the School Committee and municipal government had a public disagreement about school funding. Superintendent of Schools Joe Sawyer recommended a 4.75 percent increase to the school budget – the maximum allowed by the 2021 override agreement – while the municipal government held the School Department’s budget at a 4.25 percent increase.

On April 15, Sawyer informed the School Committee that an agreement has been tentatively reached. Sawyer is now proposing a 4.53 percent increase to the school budget. The $94,431,135 proposed budget is an increase of $4 million over fiscal year 2026…
