GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A new nonprofit grocery store is filling a gap in Grand Rapids’ Creston neighborhood, offering fresh produce and other essentials within walking distance.
“There’s not a lot of walkable, accessible, affordable food options here,” Alex Karatkiewicz, executive director of the Creston Neighborhood Association, told News 8.

Georgie’s Farm Market, located at 1364 Plainfield Ave. NE near Spencer Street, was created to change that. The store opened earlier this month. It’s an extension of North End Community Ministry’s food pantry, which is just next door, with collaboration from the Creston Neighborhood Association and the North End Wellness Coalition.
Doug Domine, who manages the shop, explained that food pantries often lack fresh produce. That’s why you’ll find a wide array on the shelves at Georgie’s Farm Market: apples, pears, bananas, oranges, potatoes, onions, carrots and lettuce.
“We had surveyed the community and asked them what produce items did they want,” Domine said. “And we pretty much focused on those and added a couple extras, just because they’re top-selling items.”
