ST. LOUIS – An Illinois man admitted to engaging in a conspiracy to steal checks from St. Louis mail and deposit more than half a million dollars into fraudulently-opened bank accounts.
On Wednesday, Isaiah W. Douglas, 24, of Champaign, pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit bank fraud and one count of possession of stolen mail matter.
Douglas admitted to conspiring with others to deposit checks stolen from mail in St. Louis-area collection boxes. The group intended to open unauthorized bank accounts in the names of the businesses that were listed as payees on the checks, investigators say…
