ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) — A site along Swannanoa River Road heavily damaged by flooding from Helene could soon be redeveloped into a large apartment complex.
The former Hajoca property, once home to multiple commercial retail stores, is now being considered for a 549-unit apartment development, according to proposal documents submitted to the City of Asheville. Local leaders say the project could help ease housing pressures across Asheville and western North Carolina.
“Land of Sky did a report that indicated we need 30,000 more housing units,” said Nathan Ramsey with Land of Sky.
Ramsey says the Land of Sky Regional Council provides assistance to support the region’s local governments, but does not have any say in the process of approval for developments or government decisions. But officials also say demand remains especially high for affordable housing…
