(WGHP) — It’s late June/early July. The sun is out, the days are long and it’s hot and muggy. So why all the fuss over our current heat wave?
Heat Dome
First, let’s talk about the heat dome. What is a heat dome? A heat dome forms when a large high-pressure system doesn’t move or moves very slowly while covering a massive area. Under high-pressure, the air sinks. As the air sinks, it warms up. Also, under high pressure, sinking air suppresses cloud development. So what you end up with is a large area that is nearly cloud-free and hot. It’s not a good combination if you are trying to stay cool.
Drought
Second, the Piedmont is struggling through a very difficult drought. Most of the region is experiencing extreme to exceptional drought conditions. Our soil is already very dry. When you bring in the heat dome, the ground will dry out even more, and our temperatures will climb faster.
Another reason why this heat wave stands out is that it’s coming at a time when a lot of people will be outside. Picnics, trips to the pool and time on the boat may be a part of your July 4 celebration. It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement and forget about your heat safety plan. But with dangerous heat and humidity in the forecast, you have to stay aware.
Heat Risks
The National Weather Service Heat Risk map is at a major level on Friday and could be as high as extreme on Saturday. To maintain your health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggests taking frequent breaks in the shade, staying hydrated and staying away from or limiting drinks with alcohol and caffeine.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention adds that we need to listen to our bodies. We should know the symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Dizziness, thirst, heavy sweating, nausea and weakness could be signs of heat exhaustion. Moving into a cool area and sipping cool water should help reduce the symptoms. Confusion, dizziness, and unconsciousness are signs of heat stroke, and medical attention is needed immediately.
