Baldwin County doctor: Beware of dangerous viral trends like the ‘Benadryl Challenge’

BALDWIN COUNTY, Ala. (WKRG) — Parents are being warned as another dangerous trend circulates online. It’s called the ‘Benadryl Challenge.’

“It encourages young people to take really dangerous amounts of Benadryl,” Drug Education Council Executive Director Virginia Guy said.

“There’s a very high misconception that because a medication is over the counter, that it’s not dangerous,” Pediatric Hospital Physician Dr. Robin Boyer said. “All medications can be dangerous, and especially if you’re intentionally overdosing on them.”

Dr. Boyer with Thomas Hospital said kids participate in the trend to get a hallucinogenic effect. Kids are urged to think twice, as the challenge could come with dangerous side effects or even death…
