KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — Kalamazoo firefighters say fireworks contributed to at least three of eight fires they were called to in a 12-hour period overnight Saturday into Sunday.
The long night began at 10 p.m. on July 4, when the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety was called to a detached garage fire on Sheridan Drive near Lovers Lane. Just 15 minutes later, firefighters were called to a fire at a home with flames showing on James Street between Lake and Jackson streets. By 11 p.m., the fire department was called to a porch fire on N. Park Street at North Street.
What to remember when lighting fireworks for the Fourth of July
As time ticked into Sunday, July 5, KDPS was called to a dumpster fire on Fox Ridge Drive near Alamo Avenue at 12:15 a.m. and 15 minutes later, to a home on Vernon Avenue near Belford Street for a firework that had gone off inside of a home.
Another dumpster fire call happened at 1 a.m. on Heatherdowns Lane off of Gull Road followed by a trash can fire that had extended to the roof and attic of a home on Jefferson Avenue near Denner Street. The last call of the 12-hour period happened hours later, at 7:15 a.m., when KDPS was called to a water flow alarm at a business on Covington Road east of Manchester Road…
