WILLIAMSBURG — A plan to reduce Highway 149 at Interstate 80 from four lanes to two lanes has been scrapped by the Iowa Department of Transportation after Iowa County found a way to pay for traffic lights at the I-80 ramps.
The City of Williamsburg asked the DOT to allow the city to remove traffic lights on the Interstate 80 ramps on Highway 149 and put up stop signs because the City didn’t have the money to replace one of the lights after it was struck by lightning.
The DOT completed a traffic count to test the feasibility of removal of the lights and found that the city could safely remove the lights if they reduced the four-lane highway to two lanes with a turning lane south of the mall…
