As summer heat intensifies in Boise, Corpus Commons is seeing record demand at the city’s only daytime shelter, with staff responding to more heat-related medical emergencies than in years past and serving a growing number of people who have nowhere to go overnight.
At Corpus Commons, staff say they are seeing a “revolving door” of new faces this summer, with many people arriving in crisis and carrying their belongings in grocery bags. The nonprofit now serves about 200 people a day, and Executive Director Jess Abbott said the lack of overnight options is forcing people to cycle in and out of services.
So normally they would be with us all day, and now they are kind of in for a day, gone for a few days, back for a week, and that really effects resources and us trying to get ahold of them with helping with them being on different housing lists,” Abbott said…
