ATLANTA, GA — A woman died Monday afternoon after a driver running from Georgia troopers lost control and crashed into a gas station parking lot in Atlanta, authorities said. The Georgia State Patrol said the collision happened during a traffic pursuit on I-20 west and left several people hurt.
Investigators said the driver was trying to avoid a stop for speeding before the crash. The incident was one of multiple deadly wrecks troopers investigated across the Memorial Day weekend.
How It Started
Troopers said they first tried to stop a Hyundai Elantra moving 90 mph in a 55 mph zone around 2:45 p.m. on I-20 west. The driver, later identified by authorities as 26-year-old Fre’shun Tyai White of Marietta, slowed briefly before speeding off.
According to the State Patrol, the vehicle crossed several lanes, took the Boulevard exit ramp, and then abruptly returned to the interstate, nearly causing another crash. A trooper behind the car could not safely continue the pursuit once White moved back onto I-20.
