Birmingham City Schools welcomes new teachers, staff ahead of start of school year

With the first day of school just weeks away, Birmingham City Schools is preparing for the new year by getting its newest employees ready to serve students.

The district officially welcomed dozens of new teachers, administrators and support staff during its annual new employee orientation at Parker High School. Birmingham City Schools Chief of Staff Terry Lamar said the district brought on “a little more than 200 new hires on the teacher side.”

Even with those additions, Lamar said Birmingham City Schools is still working to fill multiple positions, including bus drivers. “We need quite a few special education teachers. We also need some additional math and science, so we are looking at those areas primarily,” Lamar said. “Those are the ones we are in dire need of filling, especially on the sped side.”…
