NICHOLASVILLE, Ky. (FOX 56) — Beginning July 15, Kentucky drivers must stop for school and church buses displaying a stop arm and flashing red lights in both directions on most roadways. This change is aimed at improving student safety ahead of the new school year.
The biggest change affects four-lane roads. Under the new law, traffic traveling in both directions must stop unless the roadway is separated by a raised barrier or an unpaved median. A center turn lane does not qualify as a median, meaning drivers on both sides of the road are required to stop.
Nicholasville Police Public Information Officer Sam Wade said the update is intended to eliminate confusion about when drivers are required to stop.

“Historically, there’s been some confusion on larger roadways. When should someone stop and someone shouldn’t,” Wade said. “Frankfort sought to clarify that by now, saying on the larger roads, the four-lane roads, that all traffic, both same direction and opposing direction, needs to stop.”…
