TCAP results show statewide gains, though most students aren’t yet proficient

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Tennessee students made academic gains across every tested subject on this year’s Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program (TCAP), according to newly released state assessment results. However, fewer than half of Tennessee students met proficiency in any tested subject.

According to the TCAP results, statewide proficiency increased in English language arts, math, science, and social studies compared to last year. The state also highlighted third-grade reading, where students reached the highest proficiency rate since Tennessee adopted its current English language arts standards in 2017.

Some education leaders told Nexstar’s News 2 that the scores are proof of a post-pandemic bounce back.

“Our students are recovering academically from the past year. There have been some significant challenges and they’ve started they’re starting to really overcome those challenges, and that’s encouraging to see,” said Joe Crabtree, vice president of the Tennessee Education Association…
