ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — David Martell spent years as a professor with the University of Toronto studying fire management, often monitoring crews as they tried to stamp out wildfires.
He told Adam Chodak Thursday that these wildfires devouring forests in northern Canada and sending smoke through North America, including here in Rochester, are a relatively new phenomenon.
“This problem has started to emerge more often in the last 10 to 20 years,” Martell said. “I think where it first got public notice is there was a lot of smoke from some Quebec fires that got pushed down into the New York City.”…
