National Park Service announces plans to tear down this final piece of DC transit history

WASHINGTON — A vestige of D.C.’s expansive transit history is officially coming down after years of debate.

The Foundry Branch Trestle Bridge has been closed off to the public since 2016 due to concerns over the structural integrity of the rusting metal bridge. Due to that, the southern end of the popular Glover Archbold Trail has also been blocked off, forcing urban hikers and runners to divert off to Foxhall Road NW.

On Wednesday, the National Park Service announced a final agreement (MOA) to demolish the bridge and reopen the southern entrance of the Glover Archbold Trail. The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, as owners of the structure, now has the authority to begin demolition with the approval of the NPS, the D.C.
