North Carolina Ports plans to use $9.8 million in recently awarded federal funds to construct a new off-terminal access and parking facility, along with a pedestrian bridge and shuttle connections at the Port of Wilmington.
The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) announced $1.73 billion in federal grants for 127 projects, including the one at the Port of Wilmington, last week. The project aims to remove private vehicles from the port’s active marine terminal, according to a North Carolina Ports spokesperson.
“By separating personal vehicles and pedestrians from cargo handling, rail operations, and heavy truck movements, the project will fundamentally improve how workers and authorized users access the terminal while increasing freight mobility, terminal capacity, and operational reliability,” the spokesperson wrote in an email to the Business Journal…
