Smoky conditions impact dozens of events in Mid-Michigan

LANSING, Mich (WLNS) — Across Mid-Michigan, dozens of outdoor events were canceled Thursday due to the unhealthy air conditions — but a few others quickly adapted.

One of them was the fifth MSUFCU Backyard Bash, usually held at the Eagle Eye Golf Course in Bath. Grant Hendrickson, President of Share the Music Foundation said despite the haze, he knew the show must go on and moved the MSUFCU Backyard Bash inside.

“When we saw the weather report, we realized yesterday we’ve gotta pivot,” said Hendrickson. “We were supposed to do it outside in the beautiful outdoor gardens. But the exposure amount of time you’re supposed to be outside is like basically nothing. So we wanted to be safe. And I think people prefer air conditioning as well.”

The event helps raise money for families who need financial assistance. Organizers said they expected to raise $10,000 at the event.

“We’ve got international artists that have come from all over to play right here in our backyard and raise money for the MSU Community Music Schools Financial Assistance Program, giving kids an opportunity to pursue music lessons and music therapy that wouldn’t otherwise have the money to do so,” said Hendrickson. “Great night, great cause, incredible performances, and super excited that we could still do the show inside.”…
