Two Drivers Die in Separate Weekend Crashes on Lowcountry Highways as South Carolina Investigators Probe Both Wrecks

BEAUFORT, SC — Two people were killed in separate vehicle crashes over the weekend in South Carolina’s Lowcountry, authorities said. One wreck happened late Saturday on U.S. Highway 17 in Jasper County, and the other came just after midnight Sunday on Hilton Head.

Crash on U.S. 17

The first collision happened around 10 p.m. June 14 near Okeetee Fire Tower Road, according to Master Trooper Joseph Rowell with the South Carolina Highway Patrol. A 2023 Toyota sedan was traveling south when it crossed the center line and hit a northbound 2017 Chevrolet pickup truck.

The pickup’s driver and passenger were taken to a nearby hospital. The sedan driver, Mason Meadows, 27, of St. Augustine, Florida, died in the crash, the Jasper County Coroner’s Office said.

Hilton Head wreck

The second fatal crash happened just after midnight June 15 on U.S. Highway 278 near Helmsman Way on Hilton Head. Investigators said a 2007 Ford pickup truck was headed west when it left the roadway and struck a tree.

Cesar Camarillo Acosta, 32, of Hilton Head, died from injuries in the wreck, according to the Beaufort County Coroner’s Office.
