Man charged after scooter crash seriously injures woman on S.F.’s Powell Street

A man accused of striking and seriously injuring a 72-year-old woman with an electric scooter while fleeing San Francisco police has been charged with seven felonies, prosecutors announced Thursday.

Melthon Branch, 35, was charged with evading an officer, causing serious bodily injury, felony hit-and-run, elder abuse, assault with a deadly weapon, battery causing serious bodily injury, evading an officer while traveling against traffic, and possession of methamphetamine for sale, according to the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office.

Prosecutors said an officer spotted Branch riding an electric scooter on the sidewalk near Ellis and Jones streets around 8:26 p.m. Monday. The officer recognized Branch from previous encounters and believed he had an outstanding U.S. Marshals Service warrant…
